SMP should never be considered a single appointment process. The average human scalp has an incredible 100,000 hair follicles, 700-1000 per square inch. Reagan is committed to delivering the most authentic replication possible – the appearance of natural hair. As a result it usually takes a minimum of three sessions to achieve a great result on a predominately bald head. Generally and depending on your specific needs, our advice on scheduling would be along these lines: Initial No Obligation Free Consultation: Consultation and patch test. First Session: At least 24 hours after initial consultation. Likely to last approximately between 3-5 hours depending on the complexity of your micropigmentation needs. Second Session: About 1 week later, lasting approximately 2-4 hours gently perfecting the color and refining the hairline. Third Session: 2 to 4 weeks later, approximately 1-3 hours to perfect the shade and hairline for your perfect result. Total time period to completion ranges between 4 – 6 weeks.e Description
At Reagan Hart Ink everyone is treated as an individual. Thus there is no ‘one size fits all’ process or price that we apply. The price of your treatment will depend very much on the stage of your hair loss and the type of look you desire. It is based on the number of sessions and time required and the complexity of the procedure. When you visit us for your free, no-obligation, style consultation and patch test we will issue a quote at that time which will be valid for a set period. If we start the treatment within that period that will be the price you pay, regardless of whether we have to spend more time on your treatment than initially suggested. We are always focused on your satisfaction and achieving a look that we’re all happy with.
The consultation process is quite extensive and Reagan will work to your instructions to create an appropriate and authentic hairline. A wax pencil is used to demonstrate the position of the hairline that will work for you. Your satisfaction is paramount and your preferences will be observed. If you are unsure of what style or type of hairline will work for you, Reagan will be there to help. With artistic experience on how to fit a hairline to head shape and age, she can help recommend what’s best. Many choices are available from a firmly defined hairline to a soft, jagged or perhaps even a mature, slightly receding effect. We recommend a soft line initially and making adjustments to reach perfection during the course of your sessions throughout the treatment process.
SMP is non-invasive and requires no down time. In most cases, you will not need to take any extended time away from work, school, or other functions. After treatment it is common to notice slight redness on the scalp for 2-3 days post session. This redness subsides quickly and most clients return to work either right away or within a couple days. Clients are also allowed to wear clean hats or headwear should they feel the need.
SMP has become such an effective hair loss solution because of its consistently natural and undetectable results. Reagan prides herself on the ability to seamlessly replicate each individual hair follicle to create a perfect match for each client. You can expect instant results with an immediately visible hairline as well as some redness, which will fade after a few days. Initially pigment dots can appear darker than planned. It may take up to four weeks before the pigments soften to their natural look and finished size. As mentioned before our treatments usually take three sessions with results improving after each.
After completion of your treatment (3-4 sessions) a client should expect the strength of the color to last for 3-5 years. Over a longer term, a client will very gradually begin to notice slight lightening (not discolor) of the treatment. We generally recommend brief touch-ups every 3-5 years to restore any fading and secure many more years of the style. We do advise caution with exposure to the sun as sunburn can have a detrimental effect on your SMP. We also advise caution with any products containing AHA’s (retinols and glycolic acids) as any form of chemical exfoliation will also have a detrimental effect on your SMP.
Some initial fading will occur as your natural shade is achieved.
SMP is a minimally invasive procedure that most clients describe as feeling a slight discomfort; typically described as a 3 on a scale from 1 to 10.
If you have scars from a hair transplant, cosmetic surgery or trauma, SMP can help to camouflage them by replicating tiny hair follicles inside the scarring and blending the color around the scarring area. SMP can camouflage all forms of scarring: Strip, plug, FUE/FUT, Alopecia, cosmetic surgery, flat, raised and indented.
Yes, those with grey or blonde hair can still benefit from the SMP procedure. First, most clients are recommended to cut their hair to a short buzzed length- with the exception of certain long haired density building treatments. When this is done, grey and blonde hair does not appear as grey because the hair root itself is darker. Hair only shows as grey as it gets longer. Second, we use a grey-scale pigment that can be adjusted in shade to blend with lighter hair tones. We simply create a lighter dilution for blending into the existing grey hairs.
We are able to match the shade of our pigment to a wide range of skin tones. Whether you are caucasian, african american, hispanic, asian, or pacific islander SMP can work for you.
We issue a 24 month guarantee dated from the end of your final session of your treatment.
After the treatment, your body will begin to repair the ‘damage’ with minor scabs at the dot sites. These ‘scabs’ will usually fall away naturally or can be removed with a gentle exfoliation between 5-7 days after the treatment to leave your scalp with the appearance you’d hope for.
Reagan provides complete after care guidelines, though it is relatively straightforward. Intense (sweat-producing) exercise is not recommended for 7 days after treatment and the scalp should not be washed nor shaved for 4 days. We recommend using a high-specification (30-50SPF) sunscreen, and chlorinated swimming pools are to be avoided for a month.
It can be down to personal tastes and your speed of re-growth. Most clients tend to adopt a freshly shaved or ‘buzzed’ look shaving every 1-2 days. Letting your hair grow out will adjust the appearance thus we tend to advise that you take care to see what level of grooming is required.
Depending upon the pattern and extent of the thinning hair, some clients are able to maintain a longer length of hair. SMP can help thicken areas so that less of the scalp is seen showing through. However, if there is a strong pattern of hair loss or just not a lot of hair density left, the client is recommended to crop it shorter.
Reagan's method of blending SMP into your remaining hair with decreasing intensity means that the noticeability of future loss is minimized. Treatments can be touched up to maintain a fuller look.
Clients can continue using Propecia during and after their SMP procedure. Rogaine (topical Minoxidil) should be suspended during the course of treatment and for 30 days post your final session. This is to ensure the proper healing and settling of pigment without interference of the chemicals found in Rogaine foam.
SMP is suitable for all ages. Clients range from 20’s to their 70’s, and Alopecia sufferers can be treated starting from age 12 provided we have full parental consent.
Any removal process would be similar to that of a tattoo with the exception that Scalp Micropigmentation is only situated within the 2nd dermal skin layer while a conventional tattoo is almost twice as deep. A full reversal could easily be achieved with laser treatment(s). It is also possible to soften a hairline with a laser treatment as well.

Health and safety are the most important factors in our considerations and Reagan Hart Ink strictly adheres to the Michigan and Oakland County Health Department standards for infection control practices. Reagan only uses single-use needles while wearing single-use nitrile medical gloves, all of which are appropriately disposed of immediately after use. All other materials used for each procedure are single-use only and appropriately disposed of immediately after use. All equipment and apparatus is sterilized between each appointment and maintained to strict hospital grade sanitation standards.
The pigments Reagan uses for SMP are 100% organic with NO color additives and are formulated specifically for SMP and the scalp. This is critical. General body art tattoo ink and permanent makeup pigments are made up of blue, green and purple constituent colors; when they’re broken down by your immune system or by UV rays from the sun, the black ink separates and the color changes. This NEVER happens with SMP at Reagan Hart Ink because our SMP inks cannot break down into other colors since they contain NO CONSTITUENT COLORS. The pigment will only lighten, not discolor over an extended time.
At Reagan Hart Ink we use needles that are 75% smaller than commercially available tattoo needles, resulting in smaller follicle replications and more realistic results. Our needle size can be compared to making the dot of a small pin. If you look up very close to our impressions, you can’t tell the difference between the hair and the impressions.
We use a rotary machine specifically designed for Scalp Micropigmentation that includes a digital power source, a hand piece, and uses single use disposable micro needles that deliver a 5mm stroke length for the insertion of pigment. SMP artists use different equipment than standard tattoo artists to ensure the deposits are delicately placed at the appropriate depth in the skin.
